Apparently, while Daft Punk were filming their cameo appearance one of the cameras broke down, so while it was being fixed the cast and crew were treated to a warehouse DJ set, with everyone in full costume. This meant that the moviemakers were able to play the actual score on set during the filming. Legacy director Joe Kosinski met with Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo early on and they started writing the music as the script was being finalised and the storyboarding and pre-visualization on the movie was beginning. The Tron soundtrack is their first new music since 2005's Human After All (not counting remixes and live stuff) and part of the reason for this long hiatus is because they've been working on the soundtrack almost as long as the film has been in production - even before the script was finished. I was hooked the first time I heard that dirty, detuned TB303 riff bubbling up. It was directed by Spike Jonze and the song drifts in and out of the background as the dog has conversations with people on the street, very much like a soundtrack. It featured a guy in a dog suit, with a broken leg, carrying a beatbox and walking around the streets of New York. I've been a fan of the French duo since I first saw the video for their breakthrough hit ' Da Funk' back in 1994. The French duo recorded the soundtrack with an 85-piece orchestra at London’s AIR Studios, and channeled the likes of Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, John Carpenter, Vangelis, Maurice Jarre, and Carlos herself in its creation. When TRON: Legacy premiered in 2010, Daft Punk stepped up to take Carlos’ spot, crafting their first and only film score. The original soundtrack comes on standard black vinyl, and also features Journey’s cult classic contributions, “1990’s Theme” and “Only Solutions.” In keeping with the film’s sci-fi theme, Carlos - who had previously composed the scores to A Clockwork Orange and The Shining - collaborated with Annemarie Franklin in mixing an analog Moog synthesizer, a GDS digital synthesizer, and non-electronic pieces performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The release marks the first vinyl pressing of Wendy Carlos’ original TRON soundtrack. All three arrive on heavyweight vinyl on May 27th via UMC/Walt Disney Records. This includes the soundtracks to 1982’s TRON and 2010’s TRON: Legacy, as well as the 2011 remix album, TRON: Legacy Reconfigured. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the original TRON movie, Disney has announced a new vinyl pressing of all the franchise’s soundtrack albums.
